Town to roof Ice rink and tennis courts (December 1992)
Council to request Green Acre loans from the state
Money to roof the town skating rink and tennis court may be available through state Green Acre loans, said town administrator, Philip Kieffer, as the council voted Tuesday to seek $469,245 for the project.
The facilities located in Buchmuller Park had originally been funded through Green Acres, and interest payments could be as low as one or two percent.
Two weeks ago, Kieffer outlined possible alternatives for upgrading the park facilities, telling the council a roof would allow greater access. Weather has been a big factor in its use, often effecting the quality of ice. With a roof, Kieffer said, ice conditions would be better and people could play tennis even during the rain.
The $469,245 sought by the town would not cover the cost of new ice mats, however, and in his presentation, Kieffer estimated an additional cost of $84,000 with a possible rebate for the old mats.
A more expensive system for the ice rink would have cost $1.4 million to install permanent freezing coils underground.
At the earlier meeting, James Clancy, liaison to the recreation department said fees for skating and recreation could be raised to help cover the cost of the improvements. He also suggesting selling time to outside teams for additional revenue.
In a related matter, Councilman Michael Lari asked to see the financial report for the recreation department before Dec 31, especially for the ice skating rink.
"I'd like to see some details from over the summer," Lari said, including fees collected and wages paid.
