Telephone advertisers beware Nov. 1992

Councilman Anthony Impreveduto sponsored a bill that would prevent corporations from advertizing indiscriminately over the telephone. Telephone companies would required to publish a list of subscribers who consent to receive such calls.

A telephone is an instrument and source of personal communication," Impreveduto said. "Commercial messages belong in a commercial medium, like television and radio. People's privacy should not be invaded to boost a company's bottom line."

Those companies calling anyone not listed would be subject of a penalty of $300 to $800. The bill, however, does not include the use of automatic devices where the message is used to contact subscribers who have already order or purchased merchandise from the caller or the use of such devices for debt collection
