From the Reporter 11/1/1992

Meet the candidates night at Harmon Cove

-- John Reilly and Pat DeFerrari running for 3rd ward seat

--Council members Sal Manente and Robert Campanella were in the audience

--So was Mayor Just

-- Councilman Anthony Impreveduto though discussed was not there.

--residents asked Reilly and DeFerrari to define their position in regard to him.

-- DeFerrari held 3rd ward seat for six years said she is running as an independent because she refused to share a democratic seat with Impreveduto

--She complained about Impreveduto's three government salaries

-- his father, brother, siter and coucin who also draw government salaries

-- and his effort to effort to appeal a court overturning of the town condo services bill

-- she also noted that the New Democratic Asso exists soley for Impreveduto's reelection.

-- at this point, Councilman Campanella rose and said he expected something different, a discussion of issues not Impreveduto.

-- Campanella said Impreveduto supported his rival when he ran for election. Impreveduto doesn't control him or his vote

-- Mayor Just said he's been in Secaucus since 1932 and no one tells him what to do.

DeFerrari referred to Campanella's remark about a wall between Harmon Cove and the rest of Secaucus

-- an audience member said Meadowlands Parkway was a barrier fostered by political people.

-- the central issue for many was teh Condo Service law, which kept Harmon Cove people from Municipal trash service on the grounds that its streets are private not public.

--the law was ruled uncontitutional in 1989 and gave cove residents the right to municipal service.

--in a move spearheaded by Impreveduto the council hired a lawyer to appeal the ruling.

-- the appeal is pending and cove people still have no public service for trash.

--some residents complain that they pay for trash pick up with their taxes and again when they have it privately removed.

--Reilly defended himself by saying he wasn't on the council at the time.

-- he said some other members on the council consider their vote to approve the appeal a mistake

-- a resident asked why Reilly had not come around since being appointed to the council as representative for the 3rd ward.

--He said he knew Hans Groot was their canidate and was a resident here.

--others asked Reilly how many times he voted with and against Impreveduto

-- Reilly said he voted against the man in caucus and insisted upon being judged as an individual.

De Ferrari's main target was the Hackensack Meadowlands Development commission, a regional planning authority with zoning Juristiction for most of Secaucus.

-- she said she's not angry with Allied or Hess

--but the HMDC is supposed to be on Secaucus' side and is failing miserably.
